A knee revision is the removal of a previously implanted knee replacement and implantation of a new knee prosthesis.
The reasons for a knee revision may include malalignment of the original knee implant, loosening of the original implant or the implant causing pain during movement. Additionally, even the most high-tech implants will eventually wear out over time. Modern knee implants are designed to last 10-20 years, but if the patient is significantly overweight, or engages in a lot of high-impact activities such as running, they may wear out sooner.
Knee revision is oftentimes more complex than the original implantation process and requires a skilled orthopedic surgeon to perform.
