Many adult women suffer from stress urinary incontinence (SUI), a condition characterized by the involuntary urine loss when the pressure on the bladder is increased. This can happen during exercise, but also in less intensive operations such as sneezing, laughing, standing, bending or lifting. The sphincter of the bladder in this case is not strong enough to provide adequate resistance to this pressure.

Stress incontinence may have a negative impact on the quality of life. This relatively new, approved and certified patient-friendly treatment method is producing very good, long-lasting results.

Medical Treatment in Germany

Most cases of stress incontinence occur as the result of weakened pelvic floor muscles, most commonly due to pregnancy/childbirth, aging and menopause. The first treatment option for the patient is to do pelvic floor exercises to strengthen the relevant muscles.

If that does not help, surgery can be considered to "tighten" or support the bladder outlet.

A third option is to inject a bulking agent using an endoscope. The bulking agent will partially block the urethra, allowing it to stay closed when coughing or sneezing. Many bulking agents give good results, but only for a relatively short period of time.

Now, a Dutch company has developed a new-generation bulking agent which provides long-lasting results: the Urolastic.

How it works

The procedure is performed by the urologist or gynecologist as an outpatient procedure. The product is a flexible, silicon rubber mass made from two components. After applying a local anesthetic solution to the mucosa around the urethra, the well-trained uro-gynecologist will deposit a small amount of the product around the urethra to improve the closure mechanism. This treatment is performed as an outpatient procedure and typically takes less than 15 minutes. Narcosis is not necessary.

After the treatment, initially voiding may be a little difficult due to tissue swelling resulting from the injections. The urologist will give follow-up instructions.

The advantages of the procedure:

• Very women-friendly
• Reliable and safe
• A treatment method requiring no narcosis
• Non-allergic
• An outpatient procedure
• Quick and easy: the procedure takes less than 30 minutes
• Long-lasting
• Removable (if necessary)

The procedure (actually made for medical professionals) can be seen in the video below.

Is the procedure safe?

The procedure has been approved by the CE, which means it can be considered safe. Hundreds of patients have already successfully received this treatment, with very low complication rates.

Which type of incontinence is Urolastic suitable for?

Urolastic is ideal for treating stress incontinence in women suffering from intrinsic sphincter deficiency. For women in particular, weak sphincter muscles can lead to incontinence. Sphincters are the muscles within the urinary system that allow the body to hold in urine. If the sphincter muscles stop working, urine leakage will result. This condition is known as intrinsic sphincter deficiency.

Urolastic provides the necessary support to the bladder's sphincter, enabling it to remain closed and prevent undesired urine loss.
