Hypospadias refers to a birth defect of the urethra in the male where the urinary opening is not at the usual location on the head of the penis. It is the second most common birth abnormality in boys, affecting approximately 1 of every 250. In approximately 90% of cases, the opening is on or near the head of the penis  while the remainder have proximal hypospadias with a opening near or within the scrotum. Within the Premier Healthcare Germany network is a highly specialised German clinic in hypospadias surgery.

Hypospadias is usually diagnosed after birth. The exact cause is not known.

Treatment of Hypospadias in Germany

It advised to seek medical advice of an experienced specialist during the first 3 months of life. The best period of correction is between 3 and 18 months after birth.

An experienced surgeon in hypospadias operations performs an adequate number of hypospadias operations per year to develop experience and to deliver most optimal results. Complications can never be excluded, but an experienced surgeon will have lower complication rates.

The severity of hypospadias may vary. Grade I to Grade IV. The specialist will inform you in detail after his diagnostics. Mostly an operation is advised. In most cases the penis will function normally after operation and the surgery will not influence the funtion of the penis at a later age. This may not be the case in severe cases of hypospadias. Consult with a doctor to understand the risks in your specific situation.
